Genki-Campus Pioneering Health and Wellbeing for a Sustainable Academic Community at AIT

Introduction

Since 2011, the Yunus Center AIT (YCA) has been at the forefront of exploring affordable approaches to optimize grassroots access to primary health and personal wellbeing, leveraging ubiquitous technologies. Building on the Portable Health Clinic (PHC) collaboration with Kyushu University in Japan and Grameen Communications in Blangladesh, YCA has innovated a need-responsive health and wellbeing program specifically designed for AIT campus residents.

Introducing the Genki-Campus Program (GCP)

The term "Genki," derived from Japanese, embodies the concept of holistic spiritual and physical balance. This term perfectly encapsulates the goal of YCA’s program. The Genki-Campus Program (GCP) is structured using profiles generated from two rounds of randomized stratified sampling of the campus population, conducted three years apart.

How It Works

Residents enrolled in the GCP undergo two health checks using 14 parameters from the PHC menu. They receive personalized “GenkiMaps” representing their wellbeing status in a single color-coded graphic. A perfect green circle indicates a desirable Genki status, while notches in the circle highlight areas of concern, with increasing severity represented in yellow, orange, or red.

Impact and Benefits

GenkiMaps serve as valuable tools for the clinic to triage members towards appropriate lifestyle advice or clinical referrals. They inform management decisions on prioritizing investments in wellbeing options on campus and utilizing budgets more effectively. A GenkiMap not only directly impacts individual health status but also institutional spending.

Sustainability and Social Business Model

GCP operates as a Social Business, recovering costs through a subscription model matched with institutional co-payments drawn from budget savings. GenkiMaps contribute to a powerful institutional database for evidence-based health and wellbeing initiatives. These initiatives help reduce the burden of disease through cost-effective preventive health investments, improved tracking and triage of high-risk individuals, and budget savings generated by an enterprise-led solution.

Integration and Participation

The GCP cross-links individual health status with campus wellbeing services, nutrition and sports options, and encourages positive behaviors that further increase and sustain participation. This holistic approach ensures that the AIT community not only enjoys improved health outcomes but also fosters a culture of wellbeing.
